The Bucket List Version 2.0

Crossed off #25 and Visited Iguassu Falls in Feb. 2009

Wow, this has been a long week.  It is quarterly report time at my job, and as usually happens every three months, I am swamped.  With that being said, it is amazing this post made it out on time (this is an assumption, it is 5:30 on Wednesday and I am still not sure if I will be able to finish it tonight).  So, if you are reading this on Thursday morning, feel free to congratulate me, as I wasn’t sure if this one was going to meet the deadline!

UPDATE: It is now Sunday afternoon, and I am still putting the final touches on The Bucket List 2.0 and this post. So much for Thursday morning, congratulations are definitely not in order.

Now that the complaints are out of the way, I am very excited to share with you something that has been in the works since Location180 began: The Bucket List Version 2.0.  When I first started the site, the list was not much more than an after thought.  It was something I thought would be fun to do for myself, but didn’t expect anyone else to actually care.  Fast forward a few months and The List is the single most viewed page (aside from my home page) on the site.  Who would have thought?  Well, now that it has become so popular, I am slightly embarrassed at the current state of affairs as it is concerned.  It was put together and posted in very much a rough format, with little thought to organization or completeness.  Ever since, I have been writing down things I would like to do as they pop into my head, and I just haven’t made the effort to get them on the site.  So today marks the second iteration (Version 2.0 as I like to call it) of my bucket list.

Click to See The Bucket List 2.0

Not only will you find more items added from the simple to the damn near impossible, but they are better organized for clarity’s sake.  Now sub goals are more clearly identified, other like goals are near each other, and status reports have been added where applicable.  While this is an upgrade, it still, and probably always will be a work in progress.  I had a difficult time figuring out how to organize the list, how to integrate the new items, and how I will be able to add new items into the future.  What you see is what I have come up with. I would LOVE some suggestions on ways that I can improve it even more.  I am still not entirely sure that I am satisfied, but we’ll take it one step at a time.

There are a few things on here I am really excited about, so I thought I would spot light them for you.

#79 Create a list of my top 100 albums of all time.  I listen to a lot of music.  I also like lists, top ten, best of, whatever.  Due to this, for years I have had an interest in creating my top 100 albums of all time.  This seems to be a natural addition to the list, as I could use something that is very attainable for those times when I don’t feel like I am making any progress.  This could occur immediately after attempting the following goal:

#71 Go into space on Virgin Galactic.  I recently was having coffee with Chris Guillebeau and we started talking about my list.  He thought it would be interesting if there were some truly awesome, hard to obtain goals that people would love to read about.  Well, here is one for you.  Sir Richard Branson is the billionaire mastermind behind the first commercial space shuttle.  How hard is it to get on there? Very.  How expensive is it for the average ticket? VERY.  How am I going to get on it? No clue.  But as this site gains more recognition, there is no telling what could happen.  Disclaimer: Please allow a few years for this one to come to fruition…

#75 Attend a Vipassana Retreat. This one scares me a little bit, but I would love to see what would happen if I couldn’t talk for 10 days.  For those that don’t know Vipassana is a ten day meditation retreat.  I have heard it can be life changing, or the longest ten days ever, depending on who you ask. Tynan seemed to find it the latter, but the story about his time there is very much worth reading.

Now for version 2.0 I thought I would mix it up a little bit.  I have a list that is currently 96 items long.  I have decided to make the last 4 wildcard goals.  Here is how this will work.  The first person to leave a comment suggesting a goal automatically gets it.  That is #97.  Be creative, be nice,  and PLEASE don’t do what they did to Heath over at Project183.

The next two goals will also be suggested by you, but this time I get to be a little more selective.  Leave a comment, send me an email, a Tweet, whatever, about what you would like to see me do and write (or make a video) about.  This is your chance to be a part of the future of Location180.  I will then choose the three that I am most interested in doing, and do my absolute best to accomplish them within the next 12 months.

As for the final goal, I am not sure what that is going to be yet.  I want it to be something really special, and something that can make a difference.  So sometime in the future you will see an update on this.

So while it may not be the biggest update in the world, I am excited to finally start giving the list the attention it deserves.

That getting into space is doable. In future a few more billionaires and companies will start to offer it and prices will probably drop half a million. Hang in there. :)

It is definitely something I think could happen down the road. Probably won’t be next week, but hey, you never know what can happen!

Your #97 – Run a marathon on each Continent

That is one of my goals

Oh man…it had to be you, the crazy athletic guy that would be the first to comment! Alright, deal, but I am changing “Run” to “Complete”, and you are doing at least one of them with me!

Thanks for the comment Dave!

My suggestion is: give Colin all my money.

Just kidding! My real suggestion is this (not easy to come up with one, because your list is awesomely complete already):

Start a successful non-profit that focuses on a cause you care about.

This is left a little bit open intentionally, because you wouldn’t want to start up a non-profit focusing on just anything…it should be something you really care about. ‘Successful’ is also necessarily vague, but I figure you’ll be able to come up with something measurable when you decide on the NP’s theme.

Really great idea! I really want to do a Vipasanna at some point, too. Sounds really interesting and liberating.

Goal #97: Cross the Sahara Desert on a camel.

Did I get it!?!

Tyler Tervooren October 12, 2009 at 10:53 am

Dang it, I definitely did not get it.

Sean October 12, 2009 at 10:56 am

@Tyler, Hey it is still in the running for #98 and 99! I meant to add visit Cairo and the pyramids to the list, and forgot to add it, so maybe those will go hand in hand!

Elisa October 12, 2009 at 11:55 am

One of the great things about your list and site, Sean, is that it is ALWAYS a work-in-progress. It’s a nice reminder that life changes and as such so should your goals. It also saves you from when you get to the point that you finish everything on the list to continue having things to do.

As for the list…you haven’t been swimming at sunrise in North America? Come on, it isn’t THAT cold in Portland. I’ve done it and I’m quite sure my Portland is colder than yours! :)

Ross October 12, 2009 at 12:41 pm

How about swimming with a Great White shark? I think that would be pretty deadly, err, awesome!

I’d be down with running marathons with you guys. Lets hook it up.

Ken Kurosawa October 12, 2009 at 11:16 pm

Awesome list!
We live in time when we can actually ponder going to space without being a NASA sponsored astronaut, don’t forget to send us a postcard after you get back.

John Bardos - JetSetCitizen October 13, 2009 at 4:28 am

Virgin Galactic would be an awesome trip! It is only about a quarter of a million dollars now and that is expected to fall.

I bet that those trips will be less than $100,000 within a decade.

Nate October 13, 2009 at 6:25 am

Awesome! Nice to see everything organized. I wish I had a suggestion for you, but I’m drawing a black right now. I think you’ve got plenty to keep you busy for a while though!

Cody McKibben October 13, 2009 at 7:08 am

Excellent work man! Iguazu is beautiful and it’s definitely on my list to see as well. Which side did you visit from?

Sean October 13, 2009 at 7:44 am

@Cody We did one day from the Brazilian side and then one day from the Argentinian side. The biggest mistake we made was staying in Foz du Iguacu the town, and there is nothing going on. There is a hostel on the Argentinian side that used to be a resort and casino, and it is absolutely the place to stay while town there.

Hey man!
Congrats on crossing another thing off my list.

I’m seeing more and more bucket lists, so you’ve inspired me to go back to my drafted version and work on it some more and actually complete it :)

Have an awesome day! :)

Hi Sean! :-)
Great to hear how you’re getting on with your list. I created (a much shorter list) for my blog as my first post. Then I heard about yours and it has inspired me to do a longer one…there is some really great things here. Look forward to hearing more.

what a list! My mother did the-Vipassana Retreat and she tried to recruit me to go with her. I think I’d be done in 24 hrs but definitely one that I would try to see how long I would truly last. Imagine joining a Vipassana Retreat in Northern India!

You’ve inspired me to post mine, after all I’ve had it for so long I might as well make it public on our blog! We need to finalize our family list! :-)

We look forward to following your journey! :-)
