With all of the talk about the new iPhone 4 over the last few weeks, I’d like to review one of the most beneficial tools I’ve used on my travels: the iPod Touch with the new iOS4 (Iphone Operating System 4). The iPod Touch has always been like the Jan Brady of the Apple lineup. It never seems to get as much attention as it’s siblings Macbook Pro and Iphone. Too bad really.
If you’ve been around for awhile you may remember me finally, after years of resisting, giving up my faux pod for a brand new iPod Touch. Essentially it’s turned out to be one of the best purchases of my life. Luckily I bought it when I did, because had I waited two more weeks until after My Last Day, I probably wouldn’t have dropped the $300.
Throughout the last six months of trains, planes and automobiles there is not a single item in my bag that is more multi-faceted or convenient. I take this thing with me everywhere, and it’s become the ultimate travel tool. Here’s why:
A Free Phone*
Why spend over $100/month on an iPhone 4 with a data plan, when you could turn your iPod Touch into a phone for next to nothing. If you grab the free Skype app (or a number of others that do similar things), and couple that with a Skype-in or Google Voice number, you can basically turn your iPod Touch into an iPhone. With the new capabilities of iOS4, you can stay connected to wifi while the gadget is asleep, and be running multiple programs at the same time. Essentially that means you can leave Skype on all the time, and still have the ability to take incoming calls. Either way, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been able to pop this out and use it to make calls while on the road. You’d be surprised at just how many places have wifi.
*All of this for the $2.95/month it costs to make unlimited calls in the US. The BIG caveat to all of this is that you have to have wifi. But when 80% of the time you are at a hot spot, it really isnt that big of a deal. Besides, the times you aren’t, you probably shouldn’t be focusing on your phone anyways (I’m looking at you 4Square and Twitter addicts).
Kindle in Your Pocket
There’s been some criticism over the functionality of the new iBooks app for iOS4, but I’ve found it to work wonderfully. Essentially I’ve been looking for a good app that allows me to read pdf ebooks on my iPod, and I had yet to find anything that I really liked, until now. Upon opening up this app, I was able to drop no less than a dozen pdf ebooks on here, that all showed up neatly in my bookshelf ready to read. It even gives them a cool cover. Sure reading long novels on a screen that small isn’t ideal, but for bus and plane rides, I’ve found it to be exactly what I’ve been looking for.
Stay in Shape
This feature has been around for awhile, but it’s had such a positive impact on my life, that I feel compelled to share it. The Nike + iPod app is freaking awesome. Sure you have to buy the $19 adapter, and have a pair of Nike iPod compatible shoes, but if you do that, believe me, it’s well worth it.
I go through periods of time on the road, where I tend to be, how shall we say this, lazy. I get sucked into my laptop and don’t make an effort to exercise. THIS gets me motivated to exercise. Maybe it is the goal tracking, the constant need to want to beat my old personal bests, or the sexy female voice that comes on to tell me I only have a mile left, but this is one of the best exercise tools around.
All new iPods come with the app pre-installed, its just up to you to pick up the rest. I literally use this 4-5 nights a week these days, and if I didn’t have it, I think my body would hate me.
Get My Mail Everywhere
With me taking off for Bali in a few days, one of my biggest concerns is making sure that I’ll be able to stay in touch with what is going on with work. Well, now iOS4 makes it even easier for me to keep track of all of my personal and professional email accounts. I can view all messages in one inbox, saving me time, and ensuring that I always know what’s going on. Apple also finally updated their mail so that messages are grouped by threads. No more inboxes forcing you to scroll through 20 back and forth emails when all you want is something else. Also, all I need is a connection for a few minutes. I can then download all of my messages, respond when I have time, and next time I’m connected, everything gets sent out.
The Basics
Those are some of the newer things that I’ve found that makes the iPod Touch so great, but what about all of the fundamentals that make this the best tool ever. I can store 32gbs of music, which I don’t care who you are, this is enough. I also usually have my laptop, so if I need to add something new, it’s only a quick usb connection away. You can also now create real playlists directly on your iPod. This beats the hell out of On-the-Go playlists by the way. I’ve got access to just about any game I want for those times where the lines at immigration seem as though they’re never going to end. I use my alarm clock every single day. I can track my finances with Mint. I can write blog posts with WordPress. Get quick reference for photography info when I’m out on a shoot. I’ve written about many of these things before in the Location 180 Guide to iPhone Apps, but the fact remains, this is the best gadget you can buy to aid in your globe trotting.
How do you use your iPod or iPhone? Do you use Everyday Looper to record music on the go? How about use the World Cup app to get live audio from all of the games? The options are pretty endless.
Sidenote: Did anyone else know you could take a screenshot on your iPod/Phone by pressing the Home and the On/Off buttons simultaneously? Go figure.

What an awesome post! I just got an iPod — though it’s an old one… a 1G — but the apps are really useful, and it’s way better than my old Nano– although, for jogging, I like the Nano better for track/volume changing… especially now that I got mint, so I have my touch lock up after 5 minutes. I like checking Mint on the iPod better than on the computer.
Oh yeah… I got this ’cause I gave someone the 32GB Zune HD which MS gave me…. I hated that thing- smaller screen, crappy interface, limited apps.
After seeing your review, I’ll finally install that update that Mac OS has been nagging me about for a few days.
Have a blast in Bali!
You actually don’t have to get the nike shoes for the nike/ipod thing. They sell little pouches that you velcro around your laces and it holds the chip. That way you can have good running shoes instead of nike’s.

Without a mic, how do you make calls?
@Mark Thanks for bringing that up, I forgot to mention. You have to use the included headphones that have a mic on them. Or buy 3rd party headphones with a mic. I’ve actually not found this to be a big deal. Sure itd be nice to have the microphone built in, but its not a deal breaker.
@Ori Thanks man, let me know how it turns out! Yes the touch definitely isn’t the easiest to use when it comes to running, but ive gotten used to it, and dont have any trouble now. Not having many exterior buttons definitely has its drawbacks..
Hey Sean! I’m looking at the iPod Touch in a whole new way. I never realized it was this capable. I always just pictured it as an mp3 player but I guess I was completely off base. This would be perfect as an economical tool when I head over to Indonesia later this year. Thanks to opening my eyes to the possibilities.
Looking forward to hearing about your time in Bali later.
Great stuff, Sean. For some ridiculous reason I thought the iOS4 update was only for iPhone. Thanks for your post, otherwise I would have remained in dum-dum land forever.
Now that I’m updated I’m totally stoked. Organizing apps in folders, iBooks and better PDF support(just to name a few) are really going to make me use my iPod Touch more. (The snapshot feature is cool, too.)
I really wish they could make a 120Gb of this, however. I have way too much music and video!
I don’t have an ipod touch (palm pre here) but I’m not sure if having access to my email all the time is a blessing or a curse. I find I’m constantly checking it, which when I don’t have access to a computer is nice, but other times is downright annoying.
LOVE this post!
I got a 64g Touch for not a lot of money recently and have updated it with all the apps you suggest. This is great stuff man! Gonna tweet about this right now!
Hey Sean, glad you’re enjoying my Blog Success Manifesto!
@Erica ha! Just got it a couple days ago, good stuff!
@Josh Thanks Josh! Too say I’ve been impressed with the iPod would be an understatement
@Joel Yeah definitely pros and cons to being able to access email anywhere, but it also comes with the territory of not holding down a normal job!
@Josh Glad to see you’ve found it as useful as I have! It’d definitely be nice to see a 120gb version, I have over 100 gigs of music myself, but I’m at my laptop enough, that changing it whenever I need to isn’t a huge deal.
@Matt It has shocked me just how much can be done with it. I couldn’t recommend it enough for your trip – for all of the reasons listed and more!
A lot of the same reasons I went with a Touch instead of an iPhone. When I am far enough out of the way to be away from any wi-fi, it usually means I don’t want to be checking my email, anyway. And it doesn’t cost me monthly fees for a data plan.
Sean,
Thanks for posting this. I too recently bought an Ipod touch wondering what kind of potential it had. I was sold when read “pocket computer” on macs webpage:)
I’m trying to use it as a personal organizer. Now I know more what to look for. You list many apps that are more or less what I’m looking for but there are so many apps in the store I don’t how to choose which to try.
I also want to thank you for the post you wrote for unclutterer (that’s how I found you here). I’m planning some long term travel someday and it’s inspiring to hear from somebody who is basically living the way I want to live when I take my trip.
I’ll keep reading, glad I found your blog.
Another great post. The iPod touch is pretty much an iPhone but without the calling part. I couldn’t live without my iPhone though. Perfect for travelling and with EDGE/GPRS internet coverage pretty much everywhere in Thailand, I can get online at all times. Especially useful on long bus or train journeys. Perfect for a Twitter and Facebook addict like me. Unlimited data on 1-2-Call, 650 baht per month. Ideal!
As for the iOS4 on both devices. Some of the apps are so good, I actually prefer using things like Twitter on there instead of my laptop/desktop.
Also liking the new iBooks. Another great excuse to spend more money in iTunes store! Glad I bought some Apple shares now!
Okay, to all of you who posted… if you have trouble (like me)updating your touch to the 4.0, which I’m sure you won’t since you all seem very techno saavy, Sean will be happy to talk you through it from Thailand. On his ipod touch that he turned into his phone. He’s very helpful like that. BUT… you have to not be a dummy (like me) and don’t agree to every pop up box that comes onto the computer. I have no idea what I did, but I deleted all my apps when I upgraded. And now my touch wants to load all 3000+ old emails I’ve had in there as “new.” Quite frustrating. And, if you have the 1st generation touch (3.0 I think)you can’t get the update. Other than that… I LOVE MY IPOD TOUCH!
Does that mean you do not have a phone with a local sim at all?
I’d probably go with an iPhone just so I could put the local sim in it and not have the inconveniece (however slight that might be) of carrying two devices.
A bit like people who do have the new iPhone don’t need to carry a point-and-shoot camera or a flip style video camera any more.
There is a setting so that you can turn off 3G data use completely and you should def turn off the automatic alerts anyway. Just check it when you want to.
I was thinking along your lines myself and your post makes total sense.
I have the old iPhone 3G and am gutted that multitasking doesn’t work with it. I think Apple will release a new iPod Touch with a front facing camera soon (the really want to push their newest feature “Face Time”)so may go for that.
Sean-
Been following your blog since nearly the first post. Excellent articles all the time….
Question/Suggestion – I’d love to see a list of the ibooks/ebooks you have on your iPod Touch. Perhaps it could warrant its own post? I see Source Control on there but it’s tough to see the others. Always looking for great recommended readings!
Best,
Bill
@Bill Great post idea. I will try and put a list together and see if I can get a post up about it in the next few weeks. I will say however that many of those are Chris Guillebeau’s – I’ve found his to be some of the most high quality ones out there.
@Niv I’ve actually considered trading in my ipod just so I could get a jailbroken iPhone to use out here in Thailand. Just hasn’t been worth it though. I have a cheap $10 cell phone that I bought to use locally, but frankly, I hardly even use it. I definitely understand the argument for getting the iPhone over iPod, I think it mostly comes down to the individual and their uses.
