Happy Hour of the Week: Uptown Billiards Club

For some, the term happy hour means little more than a cheap well drink, or a buck off a domestic beer.  Portland does things a little bit differently, as evidenced by the plethora of high end happy hours scattered throughout town.  While one might not immediately associate the terms pool hall and high end, when it comes to happy hour, the Uptown Billiards Club makes them seem like best friends.

Located in a non-descript building off of NW 23rd st., the Uptown Billiards Club has one of the most unique happy hours in Puddle-Town.  Five gourmet courses, Ten bucks.  I could say nothing more, and all of you Portland bargain hunters would flock.  But its the thoughtfulness of the menu that truly makes this place stand out.  One ingredient is chosen as the backbone of each of the five small courses.  Rhubarb, tarragon, and asparagus have all made appearances over the past couple months, as the menu changes every two weeks.  To make things more enticing, for an extra $10, you can have a wine pairing with each course. Let me reiterate, 5 wines, 5 plates, $20.

Lets say you aren’t into the gourmet thing.  Maybe the only thing you look for in your happy hour endeavours is a full belly.  Well never fear, their ala carte menu is just as impressive.  $4 for the largest hummus platter I have come across (with three different types of hummus).  Club sandwich with roasted potatoes, $5.  Pizza with Bacon, pears and fontina cheese, $5.  I would go on, but I will save some of the mystery for your dinner this week.  Happy Hour is featured Tuesday-Saturday from 4-7.  Also, be sure to save some time for pool, as they have some of the nicest tables in town.
