Happy Hour of the Week: 50plates

50-plates

Since their August 2008 opening, I have heard nothing but good things about 50plates (a play on “50 states”).  This past week I was finally able to head down to the Pearl District to check it out, and was treated to one of the more unique restaurants I have been to in awhile.  I do need to preface this with the fact that I did not actually attend happy hour.  However, I felt ok making this the H.H.O.T.W. because it has some great food, and the dinner prices are nowhere near the level of most of it’s Pearl counterparts.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the very cool map of the country made entirely out of license plates, it is your first clue as to the kind of things on the menu.  The idea of 50plates is that they take traditional American dishes and put a modern spin on them.  Whether it is macaroni and cheese with chicken fennel stuffed pasta, Philly cheesesteaks with cheeze wiz (way better than it sounds), or good old fashioned yankee pot roast, they have the classics down.

If I were you, I would go on Monday nights for “Manhattan Mondays”.  The drink of the day is only six bucks and you get complimentary hot pretzels and mustard.  Go during happy hour and get some of their chicken nuggets as well for$3.50. It comes with an avocado ranch sauce that is just as good as it sounds.  Happy hour is Monday-Saturday from 3-6 and 9 to close (10 to close Friday and Saturday).

With 4th of July fast approaching I can’t think of a better place to celebrate our country’s independence.  If you sit in the restaurant, be sure to get a table by the fully retractable windows and enjoy some fantastic people watching while sipping on your mint julep (one of the only places in town to serve the drink as originally intended with crushed ice and a silver cup).

50plates is located the corner of NW13th and Flanders in Portland, Oregon.
