Location 180 Site Update July/August

So before I even had a chance to realize it, two months have gone by and I haven’t written a site update.  So, here is one covering the last two months.  It is amazing how much has happened over that time, both in my life and with Location180.

I guess the most obvious change is the fact that this blog is now known as Location 180.  I decided to follow the route of Chris Guillebeau and keep the domain as my name, but now when people are referring to the site, they have something a little bit easier to remember.  It also gave me a good chance to brush up on my Illustrator skills and create a new logo. Along with the new branding, I also added an archives page, so you can easily find any past articles.

Way back in early July I discussed some of my favorite reasons for starting a blog in “8 Reasons to Become a Blogger“.  So many positive things have happened because of this that I wanted to explore some of the things that I have found most beneficial.

One of the most popular posts in the history of the blog was when I wrote about “How to Make an Extra $1,000 in a Month“.  This was at a time where I had some expenses piling up (ironic, considering I have worked really hard to reduce them as much as possible), and needed a little extra cash.  Some might have been a little too, how should we put this, creative for most, but most were all very reasonable things to do to earn a few extra bucks.

I realized awhile back that I have been talking about my list repeatedly, yet I hadn’t talked much about the things I have already accomplished.  So I thought I would catch you all up in 8 Down, A Lot to Go: A Bucket List Update. This was also the first time I ever added video to a post, which is something I would like to do more of.  I’m not sure if I want to go the route of a video blog post, but I would at least like to feature some interesting travel and activity videos.

I for the Gorge Friday to accomplish #32 for the 3rd year in a row

I leave for the Gorge Friday where I will accomplish #32 for the 3rd year in a row

Towards the end of July I found myself thinking more seriously about the direction my life was headed, and wrote a few more reflective posts about the The Reality of Breaking Free and The Benefits of Daydreaming.

The beginning of August started off with the first of two guest posts for the month.  JD Bentley of Wage Slave Rebel wrote a great post about his final day at his “real job”.  A few weeks later, Colin of Exile Lifestyle wrote a post about Hanging Out with an Older Crowd.  Colin recently moved to Buenos Aires to start a life of location independence.  I would definitely check out his blog, as there are sure to be some interesting posts coming up.

One of the themes that seemed to come up a few times in August was What to Do When you Don’t Know What to Do.  The posts The Art of Blog Monetization and Finding the Courage to go Through With It were also extensions of this general theme, as I have been trying to figure out what direction to head with Location 180/my life.

August also saw the first ever product review at Location180.  Souce Control by David Walsh is a fantastic guide on how to leverage the power of outsourcing to free up more time in your life.  I highly recommend it.

I think next month someone needs to remind me to do a site update, as I finish up this post the whole two-months-in-one-update thing just ends up seeming like a really long list!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has made the Location180 community as great as it is.  August also saw a few other milestones.  I reached over 100 subscribers which was a really big deal for me.  As well as reaching our 50th post (ok that happened on September 1st, but I wrote it in August!).  There have been a steady flow of comments coming in recently and I just wanted to say KEEP IT UP!  You guys are adding just as much, if not more value than the original posts are, so lets continue to make this a great resource for everyone here.

With all of these comments though, I still haven’t got a ton of feedback about what you like to read about most.  Travel? My list? Lifestyle design? etc.  Which articles do you find the most interesting? Let me know so that I can take that in to account when I decide what to write about!

Glad to see you’ve had a great couple months! I hadn’t seen the 8 Down, A Lot to Go post…. It’s awesome. The videos are making me jealous. It all looks so great.

I had always guessed that you were following Chris Guillebeau with your domain. When I was starting WSR I initially thought about using jdbentley.com, but ultimately decided against it because I didn’t want it to be a “personality” blog. It became one anyway though. People are starting to associate it with me (and now I’ve even thrown my name up at the top). So you’re probably going the right route with that.

I hope the next few months result in even more success (and 500 subscribers).

Keep up the great work!

Man….I love your site. Been reading for about a month now and some great thoughts I completely agree with. Loving the lifestyle and choices you are making and great to hear about them on the blog.

Keep it up Sean—

@JD I really liked that post too. It was pretty cool to be able to go back and relive in a way some of those things that I have had the opportunity to do. Now I just have to find ways to keep doing more of that stuff! And we will keep our fingers crossed for 500 subscribers, still have a ways to go!

@Dave Thank you so much for the positive comments, I really appreciate it! I will definitely be keeping it up and hopefully will have some even more interesting things to share in the near future.

Sean,

Congrats on all the progress you have made. I have looked up to you from the beginning when I first started reading your blog. You and Corbett are my guiding light. Thanks for the inspiration.

BTW, what does “Location 180″ signify, or stand for?

@Rasheed, Thank you for the kind words! I probably should have been more clear about what Location 180 means. The idea is that you can change your direction in life, regardless of where you are or what you are currently doing. So you can do a 180 degree turn of sorts, and head to whatever location you wish.

Hey Sean, this is one of my favorite blogs, so keep it up! You’ve got a great thing going on here. I’m looking forward to seeing this blog grow, along with everyone else in this little lifestyle design niche we are all a part of.

I’m so jealous you are going to see DMB (and for the third time?!)… when I write my list one of these days, I need to put that high on my list! I just saw him tweet about canceling a show the other day because of being sick… so I hope he’s recovered fully by this weekend!

Looks like you’ve had an awesome past two months… I love doing a review because it makes you realize how much was accomplished.

As for content… I like reading about you accomplishing things on your list, as well as Lifestyle Design.

Hope you have an awesome weekend!

Moving right along! It never seems like there’s much going on until you put it all in one place, does there? I’m constantly having to slow down and make lists like this so I feel like I’m not slacking off.

Congrats on the mountain climbing adventure! One more off the list!
