Everything You Need to Know About Life After College

Life After College Interview with Jenny Blake from Sean Ogle on Vimeo.

The months leading up to your college graduation can be some of the most exciting and scariest times in your life.

For most, up until that point, they’ve always had an idea of what was next.  Whether it was going from middle school to high school, sophomore year to junior year – there was always a path.  Well come graduation time, life get’s a little more complicated.

That’s why Jenny Blake’s latest book Life After College is the best resource I’ve found for the upcoming and recent graduate.

Jenny and I have been acquaintances for quite some time, but it wasn’t until about 2 weeks ago at SxSW that we actually met in person.  That quickly turned into a road trip to Vegas – but we’ll save that story for another time.

Jenny was kind enough to hop on Skype with me earlier this week to chat about the new book, and reveal a few facts about the book that you probably didn’t know.  When she turned in the book to her publisher it was LONG.  So there had to be some cuts.

Through that process there were five things in particular that she thought about cutting, but decided to leave in the book.  She reveals those five things in this interview. Life After College

One of the things that I like the most about Life After College is the fact that you can open up to any page and get some valuable information.  It isn’t one of those novels that you have to dig deep into to get value – every single page is useful in one way or another.  This book also gets you involved.  It essentially is a giant workbook that you can write in, which will help you to figure out what’s really important to you in life – and put you on a path to get there.

Not many books can do that.

That said, I’m so excited about the potential that this book has to change lives that I want to give a copy of it away to one of you guys.

In order to have a chance to win a FREE copy of Life After College all you need to do is click the Facebook”like” button at the top of this page and then leave a comment saying why you or someone you know needs a copy of this book.

I know that most of my readers aren’t college students, but I bet almost every single one of you knows someone who could benefit from this book.  So let me know why you or someone else needs it and I’ll announce the winner on Monday!

If you don’t want to wait until Monday then I highly recommend you just head over to Amazon and pick it up now.  It’s less than 10 bucks, and regardless of where you are at in your life, I can pretty much guarantee it’ll be the best $10 you spend this week.

Remember, next Monday I’m launching my very first photography ebook called “Make Your Photos Not Suck: 50 Tips to Improve Your HDR Photography”.  It’s gonna be cheap only $14.97, so if you’ve ever been interested in HDR photography there’s never been a better time. Oh, and Monday is my birthday too, so you know, if you wanted to get me a little something ;)

If you enjoyed this post be sure to check out our free ecourse over in the side bar.  Want even more? We’re on Facebook and Twitter too!

Thanks for the great interview & topic, Sean! I loved thinking about the five things that didn’t make it in…was fun to share with everyone :)

Hey – and next time take @DJohnson’s advice and try not to look like a serial killer (LMAO!) ;-)

Jenna March 31, 2011 at 9:35 am

Kind of bummed you didn’t wear your jaguar shirt…

Great interview both of you!

Jeffrey March 31, 2011 at 9:46 am

I’m a few years out of college now, and this is a book that I would’ve like to have back then. While I want to check out this book for myself, I’d really like to give a copy to my cousin that’s about to graduate college. He doesn’t know what he wants to do yet, but he’s a really bright and resourceful kid. I think he needs a little guidance, especially considering that some of his siblings that are out of college haven’t made the best choices since graduating. I think this would be a great guide for him to get started on the right path.

Great job, Jenny, and I hope the book launch is going well!

Matthew March 31, 2011 at 10:18 am

As someone who will be graduating in December and isn’t quite sure what to do with myself after that, this book would be greatly helpful for me!

Furthermore, my wife will be graduating a couple of semesters later, so she will be able to work through it as well.

Congrats, Jenny!

Megan March 31, 2011 at 10:37 am

Im fresh out of college as of December. I have spent the last 2 months, every day, several hours a day, applying for summer internship before I start a grad school program in the fall which I believe I have begun to lose interest in actually attending. Needless to say, I am confused on what I am supposed to do, what I want to do, and how to filter all of the advice being thrown at me from college mentors and family. Is it wrong to assume things dont work they way they did after college 20-30 years ago? I could really use this book…

PS Jenny Blake your blog rocks!

Sean March 31, 2011 at 12:02 pm

@Megan – You’re exactly right in assuming things don’t work the way they did 20-30 years ago. Things have changed a ton – and if you tried to go the same path your parents did, not only would it be much more difficult, but you probably wouldn’t have as much fun doing it.

@Matthew Thanks man, and good luck on the impending graduation!

@Jeffrey I’m in the same boat – if this were around right after my graduation I may have realized a lot of things sooner that have ended up taking me closer to 4 years to learn.

@Jenna Me too. Meeee too…

@Jenny I just did my best to make you look as good as possible with my serial killer look. Definitely should have shaved BEFORE the interview rather than immediately after. Lesson learned :)

Alicia March 31, 2011 at 2:31 pm

I think I could really benefit from that book because I feel like I’m in a rut. I graduated a little over a year ago, and I’m still working the job that I had while I was a student (I’m glad I have a job though). I feel kind of stuck trying to figure out what I really want to do with my life and trying to find out how to find that spark. Though I’m a new reader to both this and the Life After College blog, I love reading the information you’ve both presented and it gets me to thinking–and I hope the thinking will move me to action.

Also…
Congrats to both of you on your book releases! ^_^

Thanks all for the feedback and kind words!!

@Sean & @Jenna – The Jags only make appearances on special occasions. Jenna, would you die laughing if I brought them out in PDX? I love how you were like “Portland could not handle that.” LOL!

Jenna March 31, 2011 at 4:35 pm

@Jenny Blake – I think you should bring it. You can definitely where it to the nicer places…

Lenora March 31, 2011 at 7:30 pm

I’m finally finishing my last class for my undergraduate degree after putting it off to live in Brazil and work. Like many people my age I have so many ideas of what I love and would like to do but am not sure what direction I should go in now to end up happy. Every decision feels like a major break or make one. So instead of making a decision I put everything off until something “feels” right. I really need some tips on how to be a more active part of creating a career that I love. I want this book!

Debbie Beardsley April 1, 2011 at 10:31 am

This is great and very timely since my daughter will be graduating college next spring. I will definitely look into getting this book for her!

Saher April 1, 2011 at 10:17 pm

I just graduated from college and I’m so glad someone wrote a book about post grad life! This is amazing! I can’t wait to get a copy! :)

James St. James April 2, 2011 at 10:53 am

I read a book by Michal J. Fox called http://tiny.cc/o28kw
Its similar. Kind of like he’s giving a speech to a graduating class.

fantastic interview you two. i’ve been out of college for a little bit and still excited to check out this book! congrats jenny, and to you, too Sean (on the photog project)!

Matt April 3, 2011 at 5:43 am

I am graduating in May and am terrified. It seems like the end of the world. I need a copy!

Jenny Blake April 5, 2011 at 10:17 pm

Just wanted to chime in again to say thanks to everyone who commented on this post! Sounds like there are lots of graduations in the air…I’m sending huge cupcake cheers from CA!

@Nathan (& Jeffrey) – Thanks so much! I think you’ll like the book even though it’s been a little while since you graduated. In fact, the big secret is that people who are mid-twenties seem to value it most — because they’ve got the nuts and bolts figured out, but then they find themselves wanting more.

@Matt, Saher, Alicia and Megan — huge congrats! As terrifying as life after college can be, the fact that you’re reading Sean’s blog tells me you’ll have no trouble finding your footing :)

@Debbie – congrats to your daughter! @Lenora – AWESOME that you took time off to live and work in Brazil. I was in Sao Paulo for a few days last summer and it was incredible.

Have a fantastic week, everyone!

I want to be informed about what comes after college. I think this is a book that each college student (seniors) should read.
