There’s no doubt that one of the coolest aspects of being location independent is the ability to work anywhere. I mean, that’s part of the allure to all of these people who are trying to quit their jobs and pursue internet based businesses. That’s what sucked me in. Back in 2009 I had to listen to my buddy Ryan talking about his days which consisted of reading in a coffee shop, surfing, and being a cabana boy at the local hotel. While he wasn’t building a business then, I knew that the lifestyle was something worth striving for. Here I am 2 years later, and while I’m not currently on a beach, I could be if I wanted Through my

I’ve heard a few people making excuses lately as to why they haven’t been successful making the changes they want to make in their lives. One person talked about lack of progress on their blog. I heard another mention that they’re too afraid of the consequences to quit the job they hate. A third wants to travel but “doesn’t have the money”. Each of these people also claimed that their lack of success in various endeavors were in large part to a lack of opportunity. “I could never do what you do, you’ve had way more opportunities through your connections.” Yeah someone said that to me. I could go off on a bit of a rant here, but I’m going to refrain

As a location independent professional or entrepreneur, there’s a good chance that you either spend a lot of time on your computer, a lot of time traveling, or more likely, both. The following apps are some of the best apps I’ve found for productivity, functionality, and entertainment. Mobile Apps 1. Grooveshark for Desktop and Android – I’ve been using Grooveshark since the days of my desk job in order to listen to pretty much whatever music I want. It has Pandora-esque radio stations, plus the ability to listen to virtually any song or album on demand. This alone makes it totally awesome. But where it really gets good is the Android app. For $9/month I get access to any song,

Check out the Travel Hacking Cartel It’s no secret that I’m a HUGE fan of Chris Guillebeau. Well, hell, I better be considering I work with the guy. That said, there’s a reason why I’m such a fan and why I always get so excited for pretty much everything he does: it’s because he does it better than just about everyone out there. If he’s going to design a business course, he doesn’t just slap something together. In his Empire Building Kit, he put together heaps of case studies, and wrote 365 emails to ensure you stay on course throughout the whole thing. The text in these emails adds up to well, well over 100,000 words – essentially making it

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas – I know I did – as evidenced by my lack of posts over the last week. That said, I’ve been hard at work finishing my first ebook for Daily HDR: Make Your Photos Not Suck: 50 Tips to Improve Your HDR Photography. There will be much more information on that early in the new year, but as I’ve been putting the book together, I’ve come to one very big realization: I’ve been to a lot of cool places this year. When the year started I knew I’d be going to Thailand, but I had no idea how many other cool spots that I’d end up seeing as a result of leaving

Let’s face it, winter will soon be upon us, and it’s already getting cold. Or at least it is here in Portland. While personally I’m pretty pumped to get some ski days in this year, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to be a bit of a Snowbird here in the next few months and try and spend a little time some place warm. Part of the beauty of location independence is being able to leave the cold and rain behind whenever it becomes too much and go some place warmer, and more importantly, cheaper. For those of you who are looking for a good place to sit on a beach and get some work done in the process, here

In the past I’ve talked about how great the iPod Touch with IOS4 is for travelers. While that is still a fantastic tool, recently I’ve come across a device that completely puts that, and its older brother the iPhone 4 to shame – the HTC Evo 4G. For years now I’ve sworn I wouldn’t drop a ton of money on a monthly service plan for any device, regardless of how cool it was – and up until last week I’d done a really good job of it. After living in Thailand where cell phone ownership is dirt cheap, I had every intention grabbing a Go Phone and then using my iPod Touch and Skype to piece together a way of

So what do you do when you’re in New York City, on the most beautiful day imaginable (most likely one of the last of the season), and have an afternoon to kill? Well if you’re me, you decide to create your own pub crawl! A couple Tuesday’s ago (yes Tuesday, I love my lifestyle), I met up with my friend Kimberly and since I hadn’t had the opportunity to explore many of the neighborhoods of Manhattan, she thought it would be a great idea to take me on a drinking tour of the city. Thus began The New York City Highline Pub Crawl. We tried to come up with a better name for it considering none of these destinations can

Everyone has something they that say they are going to do sometime during their life. I’ve got about a 100 of them on my bucket list. I’ve learned over the past few years, that for all of those “somedays” unless you make a conscious decision to work towards those goals, the vast majority of them will never be experienced. Think about the last ten years of your life. How many times have you said out loud or thought to your self “Someday I’ll do that” or “I’ll do that when I have more time and/or money”. Now, for all the times you’ve said that, how many of those items have you actually made any type of progress towards achieving? I’m

Location 180 (and Friends) in Boston from Alan Perlman on Vimeo. So the final leg of the first half of my Jet Blue trip has taken me to Boston. Boston was a little bit different than the other destinations in the sense that, it is the only place on the journey where I’d never met anyone in person. Alan Perlman of the 9 to 5 Alternative (not the alternative 9 to 5 as I mention in the video) has been the best host I could have ever asked for, giving me a couch to crash on and showing me all of what Boston has to offer. Between the Freedom Trail, Fenway Park and the Harvard campus, it’s been pretty cool
