The Encore Grand Salon at Wynn Macau These days I seem to be getting all of my writing done from trains, planes and automobiles buses. I’m currently en route to Hong Kong for less than 24 hours before heading back to Portland for the summer. Note: Back in Portland now… But this post is about neither of those places. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to go to a place that I’d been wanting to travel to for quite some time: Macau. Similar to Hong Kong, Macau is a “special administration region of China” . Not really a country, but not really China. Either way it’s good enough to qualify as country #4 in my goal to go to 5 new

The moment I landed at Augusta Regional Airport, I knew I was in for a unique experience. Maybe it was the fact that no less than 50 private jets lined the runway, or the fact that the terminal at AGS felt more like a country club than an airport. Rocking chairs surrounded a putting green where couples in their 70s sat drinking what I can only imagine was sweet tea. I must be in the South. You see, my whole life I’ve been drawn to the mystery that is Augusta National Golf Club. A place so exclusive that even Bill Gates was denied membership at first. Widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the entire world, it’s

As I sit on Delta flight 1592 on my way back from Austin for SXSW 2012, I can’t help but think about what a whirlwind the last few days have been. To put it simply I’m absolutely exhausted. Staying for months on end someplace isn’t that hard. It allows you to get into a routine, build a feeling of home and security, and generally find time to relax. The last two weeks have been a different story entirely. I started in Pittsburgh for TEDxCMU, migrated to NYC, and then spent 28 hours in a car getting to Austin where I’ve been for the last week. Amidst all of this I’ve experienced enough beer, late nights and meaningful conversation to last

I remember sitting at my desk nearly three years ago and writing out my bucket list. It was a tough thing to do at the time, because so many of the goals seemed so far away. I had no idea how I was going to accomplish most of the items with only 2 weeks of vacation time a year. There was one goal in particular, that for some reason, seemed particularly unobtainable: #47: “Go to Cuba before the embargo is lifted and have a cigar”. Well ladies and gentleman, I can now say that #47 is officially crossed off the list – and it was done in style. However before I talk about the cigar, let’s back up and take

Hanging out at New Kuta Golf Course in Bali, Indonesia Man how modest do I sound with a headline like that?? The reality is, this is the third post in a series of reflections about the year of 2011, what went well, what didn’t, and what I need to do to move forward in the future. The first post looked at the 10 Coolest Offices I Had in 2011, while the most recent one looked not only at some of the things I could have done better at, but also identified people who already were killing it in the areas that I was lacking. Today we are looking at some areas in my life and business where I found some

The W Hotel, Seminyak, Bali. Yeah, this one should probably be on this list… Well ladies and gentleman, its the beginning of the last month of the year and you know what that means… Ok, maybe you don’t. December marks a chance for me to reflect on the things I’ve done over the year, places I’ve gone, mistakes I’ve made, and most importantly, gives me a chance to make plans for the future. One of my favorite posts I wrote last year was called “19 Incredible Destinations I Visited in 2010“. Not gonna lie, I was a little bit afraid that 2011 wasn’t going to be able to stack up to last year. Well lucky for me, this year didn’t

Photo Credit: Conor Lawless Sean’s Note: This is a guest post from Maria of Fitness Reloaded. After a few very long flights coming back from Bali a couple weeks ago, I realized just how useful these tips are for people who travel a lot. Make sure to check out Maria’s site for more fitness and exercise advice. Do you enjoy flying? Of course you do! Especially if flying takes you to your vacation hotspot, or back to see your loved ones! Just thinking about it fills you with energy and makes you want to jump around from happiness! Too bad you cannot do that in the airplane. You have to wait until your flight lands. Hopefully, you won’t have turned into

Most of us go through our entire lives in a constant state of familiarity. These days even when you’re someplace you’ve never been before, it can seem very familiar. A few months back I drove halfway across the country, and never once did I get lost. I had a gps who was affectionately referred to as “Jasmine” and she made sure that no matter where I went, I’d arrive at my destination. I was in a car that was familiar, with people who were familiar, in a country with rules and traditions that were decidedly familiar. Anymore, it’s actually pretty hard to get lost. You almost have to try in order to make it happen. More importantly, most people associate the experience

One of the greatest things about living in Bali is that it’s so diverse economically. To this point, I’ve written a fair amount (and will write more soon) about the two sides of paradise. Bali, like many places in Asia, can be dirt cheap or extraordinarily expensive – personally that’s what I love about it. I can go hang out at Potatohead and live it up one night, and the next head to Warung Murah for a local feast that costs all of 22,000rph (a little over $2). Along with the video equipment I’ve been using, the other question I’ve been answering a lot is this: Just how much does it cost to live in Bali? Rather than continuing to

This last week has been a really special one for me. Immediately after a fantastic (albeit rainy) week with Tate in southern Thailand, I got back to Bali with some very exciting plans. Before I came out here I had a few goals. Things like go surfing, have a successful launch of Location Rebel, and play a round of golf at Nirwana Golf Club. If you guys have been following along, you know that I’m a big golfer – so naturally before arriving I wanted to find the best course in Bali and make sure I played it. I’ve learned over the last year that if you’re willing to go even a small step farther than everyone else, pretty amazing
