Well if you haven’t figured it out by now, we have a new look here at Location 180.  For well over a year I’ve been wanting to redesign the site, and get something more flexible and much more fitting of the brand and what it stands for. Well today is the day it finally happened. I’ve been telling people for months that I’ve done a great job of building authority and having a good story to tell.  However the fact remains that even after over 215 posts, when you first show up on the site, you have no idea what the hell it’s about.  What’s a Location 180? Who are you? What do you do? None of those questions were

Nearly two years ago now I received an email from a guy that I’d hardly heard of and had very little online presence.  Essentially it said he was testing out an idea for an internship where he brings someone out to Asia, and pays for basic living expenses in exchange for help building his business. Considering I got this email a few days after quitting my job and I had no clue what was next, it seemed to good to be true.  Fast forward a couple months and I was sitting on a beach in Thailand, drinking ice cold Chang’s with him and his business partner Ian. Over that six month period I quickly learned how to do SEO, internet

It’s about 4 oclock on a Thursday afternoon and I’m just getting down to work for the day. No I didn’t have a bunch of errands, or appointments or anything that was all that productive. I had a tee time for 18 holes. Oh, and it’s the fifth time I’ve played in the last seven days. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think I was a 70 year old retiree. It’s that time of the year where the weather in Portland is actually half decent, and people around here make up for the last nine months of gloominess by heading outside. I’m no exception. This flexible lifestyle, along with my propensity to never turn down a good time is

If you’ve been reading Location 180 lately, you know that I’ve been talking a lot about the idea of education.  More specifically how there are numerous ways you can get an education that is not only more relevant, but much less expensive than a typical 4 year degree. This post is the perfect example of that, and is something that I’ve personally been looking forward to for quite some time. Has there ever been a time where you found a book or resource that has you really excited?  A few days ago when I first saw the lineup for the Only 72 Rock Your Life sale I got really excited.  There are at least 8 different books in the offering of

In the past I’ve written a fair amount about my dissatisfaction with the current model for higher education. Posts like “Create Your Own College Education” and “How to Get Your Education for $48,000 Less Than I Did” sum up my thoughts pretty well. That said, I want to reframe things a little bit in a way that might hit you over the head a little bit more. I understand the majority of my audience is out of high school, and most of you are out of college.  However, if you know someone who might benefit from looking at things in a different perspective as it comes to their education, I encourage you to share this with them. You Just Won

If you haven’t noticed I’ve been talking a lot more about business building lately than I have in the past. Why? Because the site is evolving. I am evolving. Two years ago I was unhappy, clueless, and didn’t know how to get the things I wanted in life. Now? I’ve traveled the world, built a business around things I actually like doing, and have the freedom to pretty much do whatever I want. This post is one that many of you have been hounding me on for awhile (see comments).  This is the post where I will actually reveal some of the financial details surrounding my income. I realize that if I’m going to launch Location Rebel and essentially tell

At the beginning of this year, I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to achieve in 2011.  I thought hard about what I could focus on that would have the most substantial impact across my life as a whole. I kept coming back to one word: confidence. When you’re confident in what you do, everything becomes easier. Growing up, I was confident in small aspects of my life, but I wouldn’t necessarily say as a whole I was a confident person.  When it came to skills I was good at such as tennis, skiing, or guitar, I could hold my own. Aside from that, I was pretty content to just follow what others were doing, not

I’ve been wanting to write a post about Portland, Oregon for awhile now. Back when I first started this site I struggled for things to write about, so I used to write about Portland quite a bit.  These days there isn’t much room to talk about the best happy hours in Portland. That said, tomorrow the World Domination Summit will descend upon Portland. Over 500 of the coolest people I know will be showing up for a weekend of unconventional thinking, networking, and a hell of a lot of fun. For those of you that will be coming to Portland I thought I’d throw together a quick best of list of things to see in Portland in case you had

Since my Location 180 began over two years ago, I’ve seen a lot of people come and go. Countless people have begun businesses blogs, only to drop it all 6 months later because they aren’t sure why they aren’t making money. I’m going to tell you right now that for 95% of the people out there that are trying to start a lifestyle business, you’re doing it all wrong. There are two reasons that I believe most people have failed with leaving their job, and beginning to live the life they are searching for. 1. The Four Hour Workweek. While I think the book is great, and provided a ton of inspiration, it set people up with unrealistic expectations.  Too many

When it comes to productivity and getting stuff done, I’m pretty hit and miss.  Sometimes a bomb could be blowing up in the room next to me, and I’d hardly notice.  Other times, I’ll do anything I can to keep myself from having to do real work. Even work I like doing can be difficult to do. The more I’ve thought about why this is, the more I’ve realized there are definitely similarities in the days that I get a lot done vs the days where nothing happens. And almost every time it comes back to simple and fundamental things that I learned as a first grader. You don’t need some super intense GTD system. Just by going back to basics
