I have no idea how it’s been over a year since I last left the country, but alas, that is the case. The last month has been absolutely insane. I’ve shot a tv pilot, driven desolate freeways, ran into major technical problems, and am now leaving for Bali, Indonesia where I’ll spend the next month hanging out with the Tropical MBA crew before doing some backpacking around the region. I’ve been itching for an adventure, and I think this trip is definitely going to provide that. However, this isn’t your typical adventure where you head off into the jungle and aren’t seen for weeks on end. No, I’ve decided I’d like to do things a little bit different. The Biggest

One of the great things about computers and the internet these days is the fact you don’t have to be an expert at web development to make all kinds of web sites. Things like WordPress, Dreamweaver, self installers, and plugins basically do all of the work for you. It’great! Well, you know, until it’s not. We’ve found ourselves in an era where there’s a tutorial or a how-to on just about every subject imaginable online. Couple that with an in depth knowledge base or support community, and it makes it really easy to tackle a project that you should have no earthly business dealing with. Well this week I (re)discovered the darkside of all this accessibility. Right after posting my

I’m the first person to admit that my life is pretty freaking awesome. I’ve worked hard to get to the point where I’m at, and with a few lucky breaks, I’m able to work when I want from anywhere on the planet practically. Living the dream? Some might say that. However, the dream can be a pretty lonely place at times. I have an on going conflicting battle with myself about what I want to do, versus what I feel I responsibly should do. That’s not very clear, so let me see if I can clarify. Next week I’ll be leaving on a trip to Bali to hang out with Dan and the Tropical MBA crew, while also traveling with

One of the more popular posts I’ve written this year has been “How to Build a Membership Site in 48 Hours“. I went through and did a detailed overview of just about every single aspect to creating a successful membership site. I’ve created two of these in my life: Overcoming the Fear of Uncertainty and Location Rebel. Through the process of each, I’ve learned (and continue to learn) a lot of tips and tricks that anyone setting out to create a site like this could benefit from. Creating a membership site isn’t for the faint hearted however. While there are dozens of benefits and I believe anyone can do it, you have to look at your ability to follow through.

You’ve probably noticed that lately I’ve been doing a little bit more video here on Location 180. Awhile back I was going through a bunch of photos from my past trips, and pretty quickly I realized something. It wasn’t the photos that I was most interested in – it was the videos. Now, Ive never been good at shooting video while traveling. You find that usually your companions are shy about being on camera, don’t want to take the time to do something interesting, or frankly, you’re just lazy. But after seeing the 15-20 or so videos from my trip to Brazil, a lightbulb went off. I was able to visualize and remember more about that trip from a couple

When you work for yourself and have a company of one, something you probably don’t put a lot of thought into is company culture. Why would you think about culture when the only one it effects is yourself? The reality is, your company culture is one of the most important things you can establish early on in your business life. This is what determines not only the quality of your life, but the perception that people have of you and your business. A Company That Gets It A few days ago I found myself in Fort Collins, Colorado touring the New Belgium brewery. I’ve been familiar with the company for awhile, but it wasn’t until I took this tour that

Do you remember the days back when the internet was more like the wild, wild west? The days where if you knew even a little bit about how things worked, you could dominate the search engines for virtually any keyword you want? Well, to be honest, I don’t. Those days were well before my time, and over the last couple years we’ve seen a really dramatic shift in how the internet operates. Google has clamped down on spammers and ranking for high quality/high traffic key terms is getting more and more difficult because of it. That said, we’re poised for an even more dramatic shift over the next few years, and if you’re savvy enough to pay attention, you may

If you’re checking this out on a feed reader, make sure you click through to see the video! If you’ve been a reader here at Location 180 for awhile you know that I initially began my lifestyle business by learning some of the principles of SEO. I started with the TropicalMBA crew and then parlayed that into my own endeavors. Well aside from being able to create a livable income for myself through SEO, I’ve also had a few other interesting opportunities come my way via the trade. One of the more interesting of which happened recently and involved me flying out to Las Vegas and Southern Utah to film a tv pilot. Over time one of the most highly

So I’ve been talking about Location Rebel quite a bit on the site here. I know that can get old after awhile, so I swore that for the next couple weeks I’d go a different direction and not talk about it. Then I realized, that just wasn’t going to happen. For two years I’ve done my best to keep this blog as personal as possible, while still providing as much value as I can. Personally, Location Rebel has been a little on the overwhelming side of things. Much of this probably is unfounded, but when you spend 6 months pouring yourself into something, no matter what you’re going to run the gamut of emotions: nervous, excited, anxious, frustrated, elated – stressed. And

Over the past few days I’ve had a couple customer service experiences, that were, let’s just say, less than desirable. It’s not like I haven’t had bad experiences before, but this time it just got me thinking about my own business, and more importantly the fact that often good customer service is just as easy to execute as bad customer service. Case #1: Next week I’ll be taking a quick trip to Southern Utah and Las Vegas for a pretty cool opportunity that I’ll write more about on Monday. I had a flight booked with Delta to return home on Thursday the 4th at 7:15am. It turns out a friend of mine was going to be in town that night,
